What Indecision Is Telling You

In the original "Star Wars," when Luke Skywalker or Han Solo say, "I don’t have a good feeling about this," you know trouble is about to happen!

Is it possible that a moment of indecision might be telling you the same thing?

Indecision is much-maligned because it blunts success and wastes opportunity. And one that is habitually indecisive may be masking issues like a lack of self-confidence or fear of failure.

However, we’ve all had a moment when we face a decision and say something like:

  • I’m not clear on this.
  • I’m can’t see my way clear yet.
  • Something is wrong with this picture and I don’t know what it is.

When this happens, is it possible that a moment of indecision might reveal something important about the matter facing you?

I’ve discovered that indecision can be very useful if you understand what it’s all about.

Indecision tells you that something is not right.

That "something" may be your own lack of confidence. However, it may also be a lack of "due diligence" about the step you are contemplating.

Either way, find out what that something is, fix it, and you will do more than dispel indecision.

You will build the habit of decisiveness.

When someone comes to me for help with indecisiveness, the first thing I ask is "Are you referring to one specific decision or might we be talking about a pattern?"

If you regularly face bouts of indecision, this is a good indication that your self-confidence needs a boost. This is especially true if you have carefully considered a specific matter about which you need to make a decision.

For example, if you are going to invest in a property, you can only get so many appraisals, repair estimates, and the like before you know more than enough to make a decision.

At this point, if indecision still nags, the issue is likely one of self-confidence.

On the other hand, if the bout of indecision is out of character, it may be telling you that you really are "not clear" on some important aspect of the choice before you.

In this case, ask "What could go wrong? What can I do to fix it?"

Gather any additional information that might be useful and make a backup plan.

Do this within a reasonable time limit.

You will likely find that you now see the matter more clearly. And that will help you to see your way clear to make your decision.

So if you feel like Darth Vader and his minions are closing in on you, boost your confidence, gather the information you need to clarify the matter at hand, or both.

May the Force be with you!
